LEGAL NOTIONS

Legal Check-Ups
People are conditioned to have regular medical and dental check-ups. However, the same is not true for check-ups for legal needs. Nevertheless, hiring a competent lawyer to undertake periodic legal check-ups can be prudent. It is much easier and less expensive to resolve or address a legal issue as soon as possible after it has been identified rather than after it is ignored and grows into a conundrum.
Legal check-ups can benefit both the ordinary person (as to his or her personal affairs) and the business owner (as to business matters).
For example, a person should have his or her will or trust reviewed for possible amendments whenever there are: changes in family relations (due to, e.g., divorce, marriage, birth, death); changes with relationships with the people who are identified in the will or trust as beneficiaries or fiduciaries; changes in the person's wealth or assets since the will or trust was done; or changes in estate and tax laws since the will or trust was done.
A business owner who has a legal check-up for the business may find that there are changes that should be made in, e.g., the sales and service contracts used; the personnel-related policies and procedures that are in place; how corporate formalities are carried out and memorialized; the debt collection practices utilized.
Also, a landlord should have the leases and tenant notices that are used reviewed on an appropriate periodic basis because of on-going changes in landlord/tenant law that arise with new statutes and court decisions.
There are many other examples of where legal check-ups may be a worthy investment. As circumstances vary it is important that one consult with a competent attorney for specific advice for one's own circumstances.
